A Billabong in the city- St Peters Billabong

St Peters Billabong sits within St Peters Park and adjacent the Torrens Linear Park It is situated between the River Torrens, between eighth Avenue and River Street at St Peters.

The site was recovered, previously being a dump, and has been restored as an urban wetlands habitat providing a home to a variety of native birds, insects and reptiles. Interesting fact Mary, one of our participants was involved in some of the plantings at this location. The habitat consists of River red gums Desert Ash and a Chilean pepper tree.

Prior to visiting the park, there were 77 species recorded within the project boundaries, this increased to 111 at the time of writing this blog an impressive increase of 34 species or 44% of the previous total. Although the weather was cooler we soon encountered an Eastern Water Skink, in the bushes much to everyone's excitement, as we did not expect them to be out!

Unfortunately, there were fewer waterbirds in the park than we had seen previously, but this was m The group were very enthusiastic with us eventually losing track of time, but we were rewarded with several Boisduval's Autumn Moth's Oenosandra boisduvalii

This was one of our final observations which caused competition for the best shot! the moth was very cooperative and we got some great shots like the one above.

That was a good outcome Stephen. I am guessing the increased recordings were with insects and spiders.
