Encounter Marine Park and Granite Island Recreation Park

Updated: Jan 24, 2021

This month the Department for Environment and Water, National Parks SA's feature park is Encounter Marine Park and Granite Island Recreation Park. To celebrate this we conducted a walk around Granite Island on Saturday the 1st. This park is only a short drive from Adelaide, although, on the way down as I was early, I could not help but stop by the roadside just to have a look about. I chose well as I saw my first Brown-headed Honeyeater (Melithreptus brevirostris) I have not seen one of these and I was curious as one seemed to be feeding off a dead kangaroo. I assume it was the insects that were feeding off the carcass.

While I was watching the Brown-headed Honeyeater, I saw a movement rather close to me, it was a Spotted Pardalote (Pardalotus punctatus). This was strange as I have only seen this species high in the treetops so I quickly snapped a shot, then I saw another. Two in a few minutes was a good day!

The group that went to the Island was diverse with some people involved in coast care, older university students and some children. We all had a good time with many observations made, including some Singing Honeyeater Gavicalis virescens, Magpies Gymnorhina tibicen and many plants. Unfortunately, we did not observe any Southern Right Whale or Humpback Whale maybe you may have better luck?
